Jane Khoo
Singaporean-born
Jane Khoo began her dance training at the age of three in Chinese
cultural dance at Singapore Dance Ensemble. She graduated ten years
later with distinctions in the Beijing Royal Dance Academy curriculum
that included ballet technique, acrobatics and Chinese cultural dance.
During her school years, Jane performed in numerous national
cultural events, stage and television productions. After auditioning
for the National University of Singapore Dance Ensemble, Jane trained
in contemporary and jazz styles and was exposed to Balinese, Flamingo,
Japanese ‘Buyo’, and Broadway styles. She honed her flair for
performance through many staged productions, public events and
education programs of the university cultural calendar.
Jane’s
first attempt at artistic direction was in 1997 for a dance
dramatisation ‘CollegeCollage’ at Raffles Junior College, Singapore.
Jane established the Flare Dance Ensemble of Melbourne University in
2001 and directed its
inaugural production ‘Ignite’ in 2002. She was awarded the ‘Louise
Homfrey Prize’ for her outstanding contribution to theatre and dance in
the University of Melbourne. She remained as Artistic Director for the
next five years and staged highly successful productions in the Union
House Theatre: ‘Footnotes’, ‘Rhythmicity’, and ‘Limelight’. The growth
of the ensemble culminated to its fifth anniversary show in 2006 with
‘Elements’ described by one reviewer as “a tightly woven journey,
executed with moderate fuss and maximum professionalism, much to the
delight of the full house”.
Since
taking up residence in Melbourne, Jane has continued her dance training
at various dance schools in jazz, hip-hop, ballet and contemporary. She
has also broadened her experience by completing silver and gold medals
in Dancesport Latin Ballroom and Street Latin respectively. Jane also
appeared in an original solo performance for ‘The Aesthetic Journey’, a
film by RMIT film-maker Veronica Foo in 2005. In tandem with her
passion as a performer, Jane has pursued her distinct choreographic
voice. She has choreographed (and performed) a broad range of pieces
for the Flare Dance Ensemble in various public events and annual
productions since 2001. Memorable works include ‘Frozen Moments’, ‘No
Ordinary Morning’, ‘Spirit’ and ‘Agreement’. Her 2006 choreographic
effort 'Desert Storm' with a cast of 25 dancers, received critical acclaim: “the earthy rawness of the bodies
in Desert Storm
was perfectly complemented by crisp choreography and timing, and simple
but visually arresting costumes.”
Jane graduated from Melbourne University and subsequently
completed her doctorate at Latrobe University. She currently works as a
Clinical Neuropsychologist.
Flare
Dance Company Inc. (FDC) was established in 2007 to extend Jane’s
vision into the community to offer non-professional dancers and
choreographers an opportunity to pursue their passion
for this performing art, and to highlight the philanthropic nature of
this endeavour.
